Why do womens' shoes hurt so much?

I get in trouble from my boss for wearing sneakers DESPITE the fact that our school is built in a FIVE STORY BUILDING. Ugly orthopedic shoes are just fine, but nice-looking sneakers are a no-no. And so it comes down to the age-old dilemma - good-looks, or being practical. Why must it always be either/or?

It doesn't. Wear the sneakers and challenge the dominant paradigm. Changing the world, one pair of shoes at a time!

I'm being flip here, obviously. But, given your relationship with your boss, can it actually get any worse if you wear comfortable shoes?
