I spent most of this week on Long Island, where I made liberal use of my relatives' pool. My aunt only works part-time, and so I went in the pool in the morning and then in the afternoon we went out. In the evening, my cousins came over and we watched movies, went mini-golfing, and played board games. I discovered that I really suck at Scrabble. I already knew that I sucked at mini-golf, but I was surprised to learn that there is more to Scrabble than having a decent vocabulary.

I have come to the conclusion that, like the city, Long Island is really very nice for the fabulously wealthy. Everyone else lives in the shit part of town and has to fight the crowds for the affordable things to do. Long Island has beautiful historic villages and peaceful beaches where I would love to live, or even just rent a vacation home. My aunt and I spent one afternoon walking around the shops near the ferry dock in Port Jefferson. The town also has a community theater where my aunt and my uncle like to go.

Sadly, I am not fabulously wealthy, and I hate traffic. I therefore would not want to live on Long Island.

Well. I'd consider it if I got a teaching job out there - Long Island teachers can make bank!

I am giving serious thought to what it would take to move again. I always come back to the same conclusion, which is that I need to either switch careers, or become best friends with a high school principal. In the meantime, I hope that my English experience will help my resume, and keep watching the news for word on an economic recovery.

Awesome: Visiting home and enjoying it. I might move back up to New England soon.
Lame: My mom's rants about "kids these days", welfare, and her job (she's a teacher.) Seriously, we'd be getting along fine and then something would set her off and I'd turn up the volume on the radio or TV to drown her out.

Awesome: Lilith Fair! I got chills when Sarah McLaughlin started singing!
Lame: The traffic getting to/from the concert. Absolutely nothing about the concert itself was lame, though!

Awesome: I'm going to start crocheting again. Expect a baby blanket. You know who you are.
Lame: I seem to have lost all my patterns and can barely remember how to crochet. Back to the store we go. And maybe don't expect that blanket in time for the birth.

Awesome: Met a great guy, a guy who I really hit it off with.
Lame: After the date, my friend who introduced us said, "So he told you he doesn't want kids, right?" WTF would you wait until after the date to tell me that?

Just plain LAME: While visiting CT, a friend, via text, decided she didn't want to be friends with me anymore after I canceled our plans to go out one night. I'd like to mention that I was only in town for four nights and I'd already seen her one of those nights. I have been thinking for some time that she needed some professional help. I am now convinced of it but she doesn't want to talk to me anymore. Too late.

I do have an AWESOME to end with, however - I'm just feeling pretty good lately. Like all my life's experiences have given me the tools to take on the world. I spent most of the past year focusing on personal growth and I like what I've been seeing. I make more adult choices. I have got more of my shit together. I've seen and done things that none of my friends in Connecticut have done. It's a good thing.

Wow, I've done a whole lot of nothing lately. Maybe I should post goals, under the theory that I shall suffer public ridicule if I don't live up to the expectations established by more efficient LJ-users.

1. My goal tomorrow is to actually give my principal the letter I wrote in which I resign from the yearbook. Four years is far too long.

2. My goal for Friday is to begin to job hunt for a part-time job that will fill all the hours I spent working on the yearbook but will pay better.

3. My goals for this evening are to write an email to my brother and send out an email to the writing group.

4. And my summer goal (other than sitting around by my aunt's pool finishing off the Dark Tower series) is to come up with a plan to achieve some of the long term plans that I've had sitting on the back burner for far too long.

I finally saw Avenue Q yesterday with my sister and co, and it was just as fabulous as everyone says it is :)

Sister and friends don't like brother's girlfriend. Siiiiiiiiigh ...

Tabloids

California is on fire, and what makes front page news in New York tabloids? Guiliani saying he's rooting for the Red Sox.

It was front page on both the Post and the Daily News, with the Daily News running his picture and the word TRAITOR in capital letters.

It made my morning.

Almost as good was a story inside about a 5'4 woman chasing off a guy who tried to hold up her convenience store. He had a gun, she had an ax. She won. There were pictures from the survaillance camera.

I spent too much money online and in Chinatown, ate a pint of ice cream and I don't regret any of it.

Jeff, thanks for telling me to go out rock climbing today. I feel better than I have been for a few few weeks ^_^

Since I'm scared of heights, getting to the top was a real accomplishment, even if the walls were relatively short (according to some more experienced climbers.)

Rock Climbing 029

Afterwards, people talked me into going to CANstruction, which some architects and design firms do as the most unique food drive ever. The firms compete to create the best piece of artwork out of canned goods and other non-perishable food, and the entry price to view the sculptures is a canned good. After the competition is over, all of the food goes to charity.

I'm hungry, but I've packed all my food and moved it.

I am thisclose to finishing packing, but I am nearly out of boxes. Sigh.

I suppose I can finish on Sunday, when my parents will help me move furniture.

Kittens are gone this weekend, baby! I'm starting to make phone calls today!

Holy crap!

I got an offer on an apartment!!! It is the apartment of awesome! (In terms of location, price, etc. Not in terms of looks or anything.)

Yes, in New York you have to interview to get into apartments (the cheap ones anyway.)

I HAVE A PLACE TO LIVE! ^_^

Things to do during the break

NEED TO DO
***Taxes
Lesson Plans for rest of the quarter
***Find a part-time job
Buy furniture!
Set up a filing system for all the stupid mail so it doesn't continue to pile in drifts around the bed
Buy cat litter and food

FUN STUFF TO DO
*Go on date with the fun, geeky guy I met online
*Scrapbook Grandma Lilly's pictures while she is still coherent enough to identify people
*Buy furniture!
Find a place where I can take martial arts lessons!
Yoga (cause I'm not being enough of a stereotype)
Go to CT to visit friends. See family by default.
Visit goddaughter and take her someplace cool
Try cooking something new
Go to the Met
Figure out how to crochet a blanket
Pictures, scrapbooks, etc

Hmm. Wonder if I'll have enough time for all of that.

We got in at FIVE AM last night. This trip was fairly horrible. Note to self: don't ever let someone who you believe is an idiot plan the trip, even if he is your uncle. (ESPECIALLY if he is your uncle.)

Live and learn.

Sick

Staying home sick from work is no fun when your phone has died and there is no one else home to go to the grocery store or make your food for you.

Someday you will recieve a thing in the mail from me (someday meaning, like, September) and I would like you to know that you should not so much thank me as thank my aunt, who got lost with me for an hour today as we attempted to find the store. Thanks for getting pregnant, I get to be domestic and craftsy now!

Love,

Janet ^_^

Wedding

My friend got married last night.
I have a lot of things I want to say about this, most of which I won't say because its very personal. I will say, though, that we all breathed a big sigh of relief when they said their vows because there were a lot of bumps on this road to marriage, involving health problems and finances, but these two people decided they were in love and that they were going to do this thing, sickness and money be damned.
That's exactly the way to do it. If you know you're in love and aren't just running off your mouth, then you should just go do it. Don't fear sickness. That's all the more reason to treasure every day you have with that person.
No, I didn't cry, but I think I understand why people do.
That said, I still want to get eloped. My feeling is, if you want to get married, why wait or go into bankruptcy over it? (I may possibly settle for a wedding on a beach in Mexico.)

If you want a Christmas card, send your address to me via email: jtcardone at hotmail.

Please specify the holiday of your choice, otherwise you get what you get and no whining allowed!

Or you can post here, but since this is a public post you may end up with stalkers.

Snow

NYC is supposed to get that storm tonight, so I'm off to buy my groceries before it comes in.

PLEASE let the snow cancel school, I can't imagine how long it will take me to walk to school in snow.

Cats are really smelly.

I was looking through LJ communities for a healthy cookbook type thing and found anorexia communities. As in, they were pro-anorexia and were trading tips and bragging about consuming 15 calories. I found the whole thing disturbing, to say the least. It's like putting up a pro-fill-in-the-name-of-the-disease-here site: Yeah! I'm happy I'm sick! Damn those doctors for trying to cure my illness!

I knew website like this existed on the internet, but usually they get shut down, don't they?

Ugh. Anyway, if anyone knows of any communities for sharing HEALTHY eating tips, let me know. I have a bad habit of getting lazy and eating pasta or pizza every night, so anything that shares healthy ideas is a good thing.
